  15. <p>     DIED. DONALD ("Deke") KENT SLAYTON, 69, one of the original
  16. Mercury 7 astronauts; of brain cancer; in League City, Texas.
  17. The Wisconsin native and Korean War-era test pilot was one of
  18. the pleiad of handsome, heavily promoted aviators scheduled
  19. for solo journeys in the series of Mercury space flights, the
  20. first stage in the U.S. space program. Yet in 1962, just before
  21. he was scheduled to become the second American in orbit, doctors
  22. discovered a heart murmur, and Slayton was grounded. But by
  23. July 1975 his ailment had disappeared, and at age 51, Slayton
  24. participated in the famous Apollo-Soyuz mission, in which an
  25. American spacecraft docked with a Soviet counterpart.
